This application allows an individual to request a license to practice construction, inspection, maintenance or repair of elevators and conveyances in New York State. These individual licenses include:
Elevator Mechanic
Accessibility Lift Technician
Elevator Inspector, and
Elevator Accessibility Technician
These licenses will qualify you to work for businesses that provide these services. If you would like to apply for more than one license type, you must submit a separate application for each license.
Each license has a set of requirements (listed below). You must provide proof for at least one of the requirements for each of the license(s) you apply for.

Prerequisites
- You must have a valid NYS Driver’s License or NYS DMV ID number.
Requirements
For Elevator Mechanic, provide proof of one of the following:- Certification issued by the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) as a Certified Elevator Technician (CET).
- Certificate showing you successfully completed and passed the NAEC mechanic examination.
- Proof that you worked on elevator construction, maintenance, or repair with direct and immediate supervision in New York State for a period of not less than four years immediately prior to January 1, 2022.
- Certificate showing you successfully completed the New York State registered apprenticeship program for the Elevator Servicer/Repairer trade.
- Proof that you successfully completed a USDOL registered apprenticeship program for Elevator Mechanics.
- Other equivalent Elevator Mechanic certifications.
For Accessibility Lift Technician, provide proof of one of the following:
- Certificate showing you successfully completed the New York State registered apprenticeship program for the Elevator Servicer/Repairer trade.
- Proof that you successfully completed a USDOL registered apprenticeship program for Elevator Mechanics.
- Certification issued by the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) as a Certified Accessibility and Private Residence Lift Technician (CAT).
- Proof of work on elevator construction, maintenance, or repair with direct and immediate supervision in New York State for a period of not less than four years immediately prior to January 1, 2022.
- Certificate showing you successfully completed and passed the NAEC mechanic examination.
- Other equivalent Accessibility Lift Technician certifications.
For Elevator Inspector, provide proof of one of the following:
- Industry certification issued by the Qualified Elevator Inspector Training Fund (QEITF).
- Certification issued by the National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities (NAESA) as a Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI).
- License issued by a municipality as either a Private Elevator Inspection Agency Director or a Private Elevator Inspector
- Other QEI equivalent certifications.
For Elevator Accessibility Technician, provide proof of the following:
- Certification issued by the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) as a Certified Accessibility and Private Residence Lift Technician (CAT), and three years of verified work experience in constructing, maintaining, and repairing such lifts.

Additional Info
Some individual licenses require continuing education to be eligible for renewal at the expiration of the license. For qualifications listed below, you will need to complete eight (8) credit hours annually over two (2) years for a total of sixteen (16) credit hours of NYS DOL approved continuing education to renew your license:Find Assistance
