The annual celebration of safety within the vertical transportation industry was held November 14-18. Each year, Elevator and Escalator Safety Week provides an opportunity for NEII to ramp up our awareness and educational messaging to share added safety tips and facts about the safety of elevator and escalator equipment with the riding public. We held our second annual Elevator and Escalator Safety Challenge to commemorate the week, while offering facts about our equipment that enhance the safety of riders and elevator personnel alike. This year, 335 people participated in the safety
challenge, which was a brief quiz online, for a chance to win a variety of prizes. The winners have been randomly selected from those who completed the quiz and submitted contact information. Since the challenge closed on November 18, we have been sharing more information on the answers on NEII’s social media channels, so if you do not already, follow us on Twitter and LinkedIn. Fellowship Award Open for Leaders in Building Safety
The International Code Council awards the Emory R. Rodgers Leadership in Building Safety Fellowship annually to a building safety code professional who has embarked on an executive-level career path and wants to further develop leadership skills. The fellowship awards up to $20,000 to cover the full cost of an eligible educational program and travel. The deadline to apply is December 21, 2022. Learn more by watching a short video here. International Code Council Announces New Code Development Process
The International Code Council has announced plans to revise the code development cycle to incorporate two committee action hearings for each code group. This change expands the current process from two independent one-year cycles to a single, continuous three-year cycle. This change will not take effect until the code development cycle beginning in 2024 for the development of the 2027 International Codes.

Code Development Update
ASME A17/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators:ASME A17/CSA B44: The next edition is scheduled for publication in Q1 next year and will be the 2023 edition. There are still some administrative steps to finalize the process, but all of the working committees are now focused on changes for the following edition.
ICC International Building Code Series (I-Codes):All changes for 2024 I-Codes are now complete pending online voting. One notable change was the addition of
language in the International Building Code, International Residential Code, and International Property Maintenance Code to reference the hoistway door location requirements in A17.1/B44 for private residence elevators. Another was the addition of enhanced elevator emergency communications for the deaf, hard of hearing, and speech impaired to the alteration section of the International Existing Building Code.
ICC A117.1 Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities: The A117 committee is meeting virtually every two weeks to review proposed revisions for the next cycle. The goal is to complete the work in time for publication at the end of 2023.
NFPA 70 National Electric Code – Changes for the 2023 edition have been completed and the new edition is now available from NFPA.
NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code – All the changes for the 2024 editions have been completed.Publication of the 2024 editions is expected in 2023.
