Year Review

As 2021 starts strong, all of us at NEII want to reflect on the challenging but rewarding year 2020 turned out to be.

The industry’s COVID-19 pandemic response held our attention for most of last year, and our work included:
  • The creation of a dedicated webpage and extensive chart of AHJ activities to assist its member companies and others navigate the executive orders, emergency rules and other actions impacting our industry’s work. These resources were updated daily for the first three months and then weekly.
  • Regular communications were established and continue today as NEII is a resource for the ever-evolving mandates surrounding the pandemic response.
  • Conducting regular safety committee calls to share information and ideas on how best to tackle work site challenges, personal protective equipment sourcing, protection of all employees, equipment user guidance, working in a remote environment and other safety issues.
  • Creating strong partnerships with various federal agencies and national organizations:
    • We were able to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC/NIOSH) to ensure consistency on guidance related to elevator and escalator use. You can access the CDC guidance here.
    • NEII secured specific references to the building transportation industry in the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) guidance related to critical infrastructure and essential workers. You can access the CISA guidance here.
    • NEII was appointed to serve on the CISA Critical Manufacturing Sector Working Group and Coordinating Council.
    • We worked with our trade association partners including Building Owners & Managers Association, NAIOP – the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, National Association of Home Builders Commercial Building Council, National Hospital Association and others to provide consistent messaging, uniform policy objectives and coordinated responses to enforcement challenges.

Other highlights from 2020 include:
  • Welcoming Chelsea Chaney as our Director of Government Affairs.
  • Developed tools and resources and refined the data to support volunteers serving on elevator boards across the country.
  • Providing testimony and written comments on over 25 issues across the U.S. and Canada.
  • Undertaking the update of our essential CodeFinder program to enhance our members’ experience.
  • Several safety code changes were submitted to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) aimed at enhancing the safety of elevator personnel.
  • Conducted two educational webinars for ASME on the industry’s Cybersecurity Best Practices.

Elevator & Escalator Innovations and Pandemic Response

Building Operating Management recently published NEII's article, Elevator and Escalator Innovations Play Role in Pandemic Response. In the piece, Amy highlights the culture of innovation in our industry and how elevator and escalator technologies have aided in COVID-19 pandemic recovery.

COVID-19 Restrictions and Guidance from CISA

As COVID-19 cases surge in states across the country again, jurisdictions are extending restrictions, and NEII is staying on top of the developments. Each Friday, we continue to send out a newsletter with the highlights from the week, and we have resumed updates to our detailed spreadsheet, which is also available on neii.org.

In addition, CISA continues to support essential critical infrastructure workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is re-promoting its Essential Critical Infrastructure Workforce Guidance, version 4 to help state, local, tribal and territorial officials and organizations protect their workers and communities. CISA encourages leaders to use this guidance to support COVID-19 vaccine prioritization planning.

Help Us Improve our Industry Guidelines by Completing our NEII-1 Survey

For decades, NEII has developed and maintained the Best Practices and Guidelines for the Building Transportation Industry, called NEII-1. The best practices are industry specifications to help architects, designers and contractors accommodate for the space and details of elevators in building plans. NEII-1 is also utilized by many companies to provide some basics of the industry as a training tool. NEII-1 is available to everyone, and we are looking for input on how NEII can improve this valuable industry resource. Please complete this brief survey to help us continue to improve NEII-1.
